A new national survey has given parents across Ireland an opportunity to say what type of primary school they would prefer.

An Irish Times opinion article argues that the findings reveal a mismatch between what some communities want and the schools currently available to them. It raises wider questions about school ethos, parental choice, minority inclusion and children’s sense of belonging.

So, how should the ethos of a local school be decided?

Should it reflect the preferences of current parents, protect minority rights, preserve community history, consider future families, or balance all of these?
