Should every child have to learn Irish? 🇮🇪

Irish is one of the most distinctive parts of our education system. For some, it is a vital part of our culture and identity. For others, compulsory Irish has become a source of frustration that takes time away from other learning.

Supporters argue that every child should have the opportunity to learn the national language, even if they never become fluent.

Critics question whether making it compulsory is the best way to encourage a genuine love of the language, particularly when many pupils leave school unable or unwilling to use it.

So the first Gaeilge Unconvention question is a simple one: Should every child have to learn Irish?

As always, there are no right or wrong answers. I’m interested in hearing from pupils, parents, teachers, principals, Irish speakers, and anyone with experience of the education system.
