Exploring Diversity in Primary Education: Insights from Baisat Alawiye on “That’ll Teach You” Podcast

Very much enjoyed listening to Baisat Alawiye speaking on the podcast That’ll Teach You. A lot of correlation with the podcast from DICE with Dr. Brighid Golden which I reviewed a couple of weeks ago, especially on the reasons for why there is a lack of diversity in primary teaching.

Admired Baisat’s honesty about the barriers, especially in relation to how limited her options are in terms of the schools she can work in. I was particularly interested in the hosts’ reaction given their own context, as part of the 99.7%, and to be fair to them, I think they listened and tried to understand in their own way. I liked how they all found some commonality in that all of them got into primary teaching through a “scenic” route.

Jane and Hugh make a great interviewing duo, keeping things light while tackling subjects that primary school teachers need to know. In this episode in particular, Jane’s aim appeared to be a recruitment drive for people from diverse backgrounds to get into teaching, which I think is a really good thing. Well worth a listen.
