Ruth Hegarty Criticizes Reliance on Ultra-Processed Foods in School Meal Programs

Ruth Hegarty, a food policy consultant and lecturer at University College Cork, has criticised the reliance on ultra-processed foods (UPFs) and the lack of oversight in the programme.

While almost everyone is agreed that it shouldn’t up to school principals to monitor the ingredients in school meals, it’s essentially what the Department of Education (and Department of Social Protection) expects. And why is that? It’s all down to the patronage model. Here’s why:
