2024 started in the same dark vein as 2023 ended with anti-migrant sentiment continued to flow through the country, including my own town of Carlow. Armed with the big lie theory – repeat something often enough and it becomes true – I drove by protests in the town and watched schoolchildren standing in the cold as their parents said they felt like strangers in their own classrooms. Norma Foley’s attentions weren’t focused on that. As far as she was concerned, the biggest problem in the education system was those pesky schools forcing parents to buy smartphones for their children.
